Hip Hop & Jazz Class

MONDAYS
GRADES K-3
For girls and boys!!  Catch on to the latest dance craze!  Learn the basic techniques of dance and how to move to the beat.  We promote a healthy life-style through fun physical activity that encourages self expression through music and movement.  This is a performance based class, designed to help students gain confidence and self-esteem.  We teach age appropriate dance routines to pop music and classics from the past.  We put on a rockn’ performance in costumes on the last day for family and friends to enjoy.

Clay Sculpture

TUESDAYS
GRADES 2-8
Have you worked with clay before?  Well, if you think you know how it’s done – think again!  We will create several fun and challenging clay sculpture projects using techniques that will raise some eye brows for sure. The instructor will challenge you to take clay sculpture to the limit that will require you to be a bit of an engineer.  Bring lots of imagination and a healthy portion of patience and watch your hands bring a piece of clay to life!  At the end of the course you will be able to take home all your pieces of art to enjoy.  THIS CLASS IS ALSO OPEN TO PARENTS!

Music Video Class

Calling all Popstars!  It’s time to move and groove to the best new tunes.  Each week we crank up the music, teach cutting-edge choreography, dress up in Rockstar Costumes and film clips for a fun music video.  The video will be edited and emailed at the end of the course to be viewed over and over.  Lights, camera, Rock Out!!

Chess

THURSDAYS
GRADES K-8
Want to learn how to play chess? The rules of the game, how pieces move and how to win at chess?   New players will learn the rules and objective of the game and how the various pieces move.  Students will also learn some principles of chess openings, such as exerting control/defending control of the center, developing the minor pieces first, protecting the King and not exposing the Queen to danger too early in the game. Advanced beginners will study opening principles and study and practice some openings such as Giuoco Piane, Ruy Lopez, Queens Gambit and Sicilian Dragon.  These students will also be introduced to middle and end game tactics.  The class will include instruction time followed by playing time.  Students will have the opportunity to have games vs. peers in the class.

Collage and Decoupage

THURSDAYS
GRADES K-8
Wow – two very fancy words…  What do they mean?  In the collage section of the course we will create a fabulous piece of original art on real canvas using nothing but acrylic paint and clippings from magazines and newspapers.  You will be amazed what you can create using little bits and pieces of colored paper and arranging them to form a larger image – your art piece!  During our decoupage segment we will be decorating useful every-day items such as flower pots, picture frames, and boxes also using images on paper and then preserving them with acrylic, so you can enjoy them for a long time to come! And you will never have to hear not to use so much glue – the instructor will tell you to use more!  
I wouldn’t miss this one, if I were you!

Imagination Yoga

Naga Martial Arts

Community School is happy to announce that there will be 5th grade boys basketball with our amazing coach Keli Hall this winter. She will run the same awesome program she has offered through the district, minus the games. The players will do drills and play fun games twice a week in January and February. We will make an attempt to find opportunities for scrimmages against other teams but these details are still up in the air. This will be a great way to stay in shape during the cold winter months while working on your game.

6th grade BOYS basketball Winter 2019

Grade 6

This program will provide opportunities for basic basketball skill development and coaching.  These skill sessions will be run once a week for two hours and will focus on instructional development.
Coach Spencer Gerke coached the 6th grade boys last year and is coming back to again work with the kids. He knows his way around local tournaments in town for the players that are interested in weekend games.

Jazz Band RGS

This course covers the study and performance of swing, latin, funk and rock styles with an emphasis on advanced rhythmic concepts, chord to scale relationships and improvisation. Studying privately is encouraged.
Jazz Band runs all year long and is a full year commitment. Sign up is three times a year.

This course will introduce the young jazz musician to basic jazz, latin, funk and rock arrangements, work on listening skills, ensemble playing techniques and explore improvisation. Open to all instruments, this is the perfect opportunity for the beginning jazz student or seasoned jazz player interested in working on a second instrument. All students must have at least one year of musical study.
Jazz lab runs all year long and is a year long commitment. Sign up is three times a year.

Riverdale After School

Riverdale After School Program, Inc. (RAS) offers before and after school care to all Riverdale families. RAS is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 – 8:20am before school and from 3:20 – 6:00pm after school. (2:20 – 6:00pm on Wednesdays). We will open our doors on the first day of school and follow the school calendar.
