Creative Minds & Hands

How about painting a few love rocks? Have you ever made a “pet” from a sock? Or a bag from an old pair of jeans? You will get the chance to get your hands a bit dirty with some clay making a pretty bowl with impressions of plants in it.  And then of course there is the whole fun venture of recycle art! And who knows what else we can think of on the way…
Well, you see – you won’t be bored and your creative minds will get challenged!

Basic and Advance WeDo Robotics

The LEGO® Education WeDo 1.0 is an easy-to-use concept that introduces
young students to robotics. Students will be able to build LEGO models
featuring working motors and sensors; program their models; and
explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities while
developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics as well as language, literacy, and social studies. Basic
contains activities that are divided into four themes – Amazing
Mechanisms, Wild Animals, Play Soccer, and Adventure Stories.  Whilst,
advance robotics includes starwars, city and safari. Your student will have time to do both!!

Gardening: the Reason for the Season

This spring join the Green Schoolhouse in your school garden and surrounding outdoor spaces to explore the season. We’ll focus our attention on growing food that will be ready for us by the end of the school year and along the way be testing our soil, cultivating habitat for beneficial pollinators, testing a couple recipes, and playing field games.

Create a Book!

Create and publish your very own book! In this hands-on workshop each student will develop, write and illustrate their own picture book. Each finished project will then be published into a real, hardcover book! Complete with an “about the author” page.
 Working with a published children’s author, and the award-winning IlluStory book kit from Lulu Jr., each student will be led step-by-step through the process of creating their book. From brainstorming ideas and developing characters to illustrating pages, students will use their imaginations to develop one-of-a kind stories. Each finished project will be printed into a premium hardcover book to cherish forever.

Fencing 102

The Oregon Fencing Alliance offers Portland’s best fencing instruction in a fun, easy to learn, engaging atmosphere—for fencers of all levels as young as 6 to world-class athletes like Mariel Zagunis every day.

Clay Sculpture

Have you worked with clay before?  Well, if you think you know how it’s done – think again!  We will create several fun and challenging clay sculpture projects using techniques that will raise some eye brows for sure. The instructor will challenge you to take clay sculpture to the limit that will require you to be a bit of an engineer.  Bring lots of imagination and a healthy portion of patience and watch your hands bring a piece of clay to life!  At the end of the course you will be able to take home all your pieces of art to enjoy.  THIS CLASS IS ALSO OPEN TO PARENTS!

Jazz Band RGS

This course covers the study and performance of swing, latin, funk and rock styles with an emphasis on advanced rhythmic concepts, chord to scale relationships and improvisation. Studying privately is encouraged.
Jazz Band runs all year long and is a full year commitment. Sign up is three times a year.

Jazz Lab

Grades: 5-8. This course will introduce the young jazz musician to basic jazz, latin, funk and rock arrangements, work on listening skills, ensemble playing techniques and explore improvisation. Open to all instruments, this is the perfect opportunity for the beginning jazz student or seasoned jazz player interested in working on a second instrument. All students must have at least one year of musical study.

Riverdale After School

Riverdale After School Program, Inc. (RAS) offers before and after school care to all Riverdale families. RAS is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 – 8:20am before school and from 3:20 – 6:00pm after school. (2:20 – 6:00pm on Wednesdays)

We will open our doors on the first day of school and follow the school calendar.
